![]() ![]() ![]() Since the original publication of this searing personal chronicle, Haing Ngor’s life has ended with his murder, which has never been satisfactorily solved. Like Pran, too, Ngor was a doctor by profession, and he experienced firsthand his country’s wretched descent, under the Khmer Rouge, into senseless brutality, slavery, squalor, starvation, and disease - all of which are recounted in sometimes unimaginable horror in Ngor’s poignant memoir. Like Dith Pran, the Cambodian doctor and interpreter whom Ngor played in an Oscar-winning performance in The Killing Fields, Ngor lived through the atrocities that the 1984 film portrayed. ![]() And in his memoir, Survival in the Killing Fields, he tells the gripping and frequently terrifying story of his term in the hell created by the communist Khmer Rouge. I am a survivor of the Cambodian holocaust. Nothing has shaped my life as much as surviving the Pol Pot regime. ![]()

![]() ![]() They are funny and they are fair and they are super supportive in the best ways. If I were tracking “Best Supporting Characters” for my Figgy’s this year, Ledger’s parents would definitely be contenders. One of them.īut, especially Ledger’s parents. ![]() Plus, after reading a book with a bunch of characters that were shitty, shitty parents, REMINDERS OF HIM was like….these are the parents I want. It wasn’t a cookie-cutter book for me with easy, sterotyped problems and solutions where everyone lives happily ever after and you know they’re going to live happily ever after so you kind of don’t care. And I loved how they worked through their feelings and how the story progressed and came to a resolution that seemed, can I say this word again, honest. ![]() I loved how honest they seemed to be about how they felt about the role each of the others played in the tragedy and what happened after the tragedy, which was also a tragedy but in a different way. I loved how honest they seemed to be with what they were thinking and feeling about the tragedy that affected all of them. Mostly because I loved all of the characters in REMINDERS OF HIM. More like a “BOO!” (If you know that LAYLA is a bit of a ghost story, you’ll understand that little joke).Īnd REMINDERS OF HIM is a bit of a “something terrible happened and people hate each other, but maybe they shouldn’t because it might be better if they understood each other” story. You know how I’m doing the “All by Colleen Hoover” reading challenge this year? Well, I kicked it off with a bang. ![]() ![]() Get your Kindle here, or download a FREE Kindle Reading App. Start reading Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas: A Novel on your Kindle in under a minute.
